Job Summary

The Machinist will provide specialized support for precision mold repair and restoration through laser welding, ensuring damaged mold components are repaired accurately and efficiently while maintaining required dimensional and quality standards. The position will support mold repair activities such as parting line damage, core and cavity damage, worn shut-off areas, chipped edges, ribs, and other critical mold features.

Laser welding operation and parameter adjustment.
Precision mold repair and restoration.
TIG/MIG welding knowledge is an advantage.
Grinding, polishing, fitting, and bench work.
Measuring instruments such as vernier caliper, micrometer, height gauge, and other precision tools.
Blueprint/technical drawing interpretation.

Responsibilities

  • Performs laser welding repairs on injection molds and precision mold components.
  • Repairs parting line damage, dents, scratches, corrosion, worn shut-off surfaces, chipped corners, edges, ribs, and other damaged areas.
  • Assesses mold damage and determines the appropriate welding and repair method.
  • Prepares surfaces prior to welding and performs post-welding grinding, fitting, and polishing.

  • Ensures performed repairs meet required dimensions and specifications.
  • Conducts dimensional inspection after repair.
  • Coordinates with Mold Designer, Process Engineering, QA, and Production regarding mold repair requirements.
  • Maintains proper records of mold repairs and welding activities.
  • Ensures proper operation, maintenance, and care of laser welding equipment.
  • Supports continuous improvement initiatives to reduce mold repair lead time and external repair costs.

Must Have

  • At least 3–5 years of experience in mold making, mold repair, tool and die, or precision machining.
  • Preferably with hands-on experience in laser welding for molds and dies.
  • Experience in repairing injection molds, particularly precision components and cosmetic surfaces.
  • Experience in mold fitting, polishing, grinding, and bench work is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of different mold steels and their welding characteristics is preferred.
